Petroleum commissioner Maggy Shino sells Kudu in London

Petroleum Commissioner Maggy Shino told the Invest in African Energy reception in London on Jan 26 that the Kudu gas project is ready for investments.

Organised by the African Energy Chamber, the reception saw energy stakeholders from Africa making cases for investments in their countries.

After Shell and TotalEnergies reported discovering oil in the Orange Basin, Namibia is currently at the centre of world attention.

The companies reported a combined 835 million barrels from the Graff-1 and venus-1X wells.

In her Namibia: Beyond Venus and Graff presentation, Shino said, “Kudu is the only field able to give you the solutions you need. The product is ready. It will give you a clean energy solution amid the energy transition.”

The 50-year-old Kudu Gas project has changed hands and is now operated by BW Kudu.

It is believed that Kudu has about 600 billion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and could produce about 64 million cubic feet per day when it reaches its peak.

“The beauty of Namibia [is that it] will give you the opportunity of a lifetime,” Shino said.

Presidential advisor and hydrogen commissioner James Mnyupe also told the same gathering that Namibia has tried to make it simple for all interested investors.

Mnyupe said Namibia has created a blended financing infrastructure platform – possibly the first in Africa.

"We are going to build a one-billion-dollar fund that will be investing in all pieces of hydrogen infrastructure – pipelines, transmission lines, and so forth,” Mnyupe said.

According to Mnyupe, hydrogen production represents a US$100-billion opportunity for Africa in the next decade.
