Shell/QatarEnergy in another oil discovery


The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia, in partnership with Shell and QatarEnergy, announced a light oil discovery in the Jonker-1X deep-water exploration well. 

The well was drilled in Block 2913A & 2914B (PEL 0039) in the Orange Basin offshore in southern Namibia. 

The drilling operations commenced in December 2022 and were completed safely in early March 2023. 

Located approximately 270 kilometres off the coast of Namibia, in the deep water offshore, the Jonker-1X discovery is the third well drilled on the license held by Shell within a year. 

The Odfjell Deepsea Bollsta semi-submersible rig drilled the well to a total depth of 6,168 meters in a water depth of 2,210 metres. 

The acquired data is currently being evaluated, and further appraisal drilling is planned to determine the discovery's size and recoverable resources potential.

Executive: Upstream Exploration, Victoria Sibeya stated. Commenting on this announcement, Mr Immanuel Mulunga, Managing Director of NAMCOR, said: 

“We are delighted to announce this third oil discovery after the success of the Graff-1X and Venus-1X discoveries by Shell and TotalEnergies in 2022. This discovery has proven the exciting and world-class potential of the deep-water Orange Basin”. 

The Joint Venture group comprises Shell Namibia B.V (45%), QatarEnergy (45%) and NAMCOR (10%).

Desert Lion Energy & the Namibian lithium story

The lithium story in Namibia became prominent when Xinfeng Investments, a Chinese company, courted controversy after buying a mine for N$50m from some officials. The story also picked pace when Xinfeng Investments was caught shipping vast quantities of lithium ore to China for testing. Chinese company leaves Canada, eyes four lithium mines in Namibia

Another Chinese mining company Yahua Industrial Group has eyed lithium in Namibia and plans to invest US$145m (N$2,5b) in company acquisitions. Sichuan Yahua Industrial Group is an industrial group headquartered in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province. In October 2022, following Canada's shutdown of Chinese lithium mining companies, Yahua Industrial Group pulled out of a deal with Ultra Lithium. Yahua manufactures professional civil blasting materials and offers blasting services. The company has more than RMB3b of assets and more than 3 000 employees, 1 000 of which are professionals and technicians.  It has 14 manufacturing bases in Sichuan Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Guizhou Province, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Tibet Autonomous Region in China, and South Island and North Island of New Zealand.
